Car Insurance 101

Published on 05/05/2016

Hello, I’m Vaughan de Kirby. I’m an investment immigration attorney here in San Francisco. Today we’re going to do something a little different on our video, but it’s an important bit of information for you. One of the things that you’re going to need to understand is American insurance, when you drive a car in the United States. An underinsured motorist protection is a very important element of your insurance that is often ignored. It’s a coverage that covers you when someone else lacks the amount of insurance necessary to compensate you, but rather then explain it myself, I asked an attorney in Virginia, Ben Glass of Ben Glass Law to send us a video to explain underinsured motorist. I think they can do it best. Let’s take a look at that video.

Hi, I’m Northern Virginia Personal Injury Attorney James Abrenio. And today I’m coming to you with sort of a public service announcement. Too many times I sat in this very conference room talking to potential clients. They’ve come to me with a very devastating injury, and then they show me their auto insurance policy. And they show me they got $25,000 or a minimum amount of underinsured motorist coverage. I then come to learn that the defendant, the person that hurt them, that caused them severe pain, injury and long-term consequences, has either a minimal insurance policy or no insurance. They look across to me and say, what can you do to help me? And a lot of times my answer is nothing.

So the purpose of this video is to educate you, the consumer about what kind of insurance you need when you look at auto insurance policy. There are a couple of types you should be looking at. 1. Liability insurance. That means that you’re protected in case you hurt somebody else. 2. Medical expense coverage. It’s usually a small policy that’s meant to cover short-term cost, short-term medical bills that helps you out in the crunch. But the one that I’m really concerned about you knowing about, and I think GEICO and Allstate, and all the other insurance companies never educate you about is underinsured motorist coverage. What this insurance policy does is it protects you in the event that somebody else, somebody negligent, somebody not responsible enough to get insurance hurt you, and you’re left with serious injuries and you don’t have a job, because you’re injured, and you don’t have income coming in. In many instances for a lot of my clients, they don’t have health insurance. Underinsured motorist coverage is important, because if you get injured, it protects you from somebody else’s negligence.

I hope this is helpful.
